SAGE hosts the best thinkers across intelligent transport systems

Published: April 23, 2018 - Updated: September 4, 2018

Some of Australia’s most innovative intelligent transport systems (ITS) projects were showcased to a national audience of transport professionals at Tonsley Innovation Precinct last week.

Hosted by SAGE Automation, the April ITS Business Networking Event at Tonsley Innovation Precinct in Adelaide was attended by more than 100 professionals from across the country.

The audience heard from key players in the industry, including Aron Hausler New Venture Institute, Jeremy Conway Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure SA, Andrea Ash Cohda Wireless, and ITS Australia’s Susan Harris and Dean Zabrieszach.

The event gave planners and transport professionals insights into how the latest technologies and intelligent transport systems are being employed in South Australia, and nationally.

Speaking at the event, SAGE’s National Manager of Transport Damian Hewitt said technology was key to reducing road congestion, naming Adelaide’s O-Bahn guided bus tunnel and Sydney’s Northern Beaches Tidal Flow Traffic System as landmark examples.

“SAGE’s Smart Transport model is about using technology to reduce congestion on major road projects.”

Adelaide’s O-Bahn tunnel is equipped with state of the art C-ITS technologies including unauthorised vehicle detection and more than 14 smart systems that work to improve bus services and reduce congestion at entry points.

Sydney’s Northern Beaches Automatic Tidal Flow Traffic System reverses traffic direction during morning and evening peak hours using movable medians and a series of ITS devices and control.

SAGE’s speciality is connectivity, so on the Northern Beaches project we’re not only connecting the tidal flow system, we’re also connecting the bus stops to the busses, and the busses to the tidal flow.

“It’s about connecting the whole corridor for improved traffic flow management,” Mr Hewitt said.

Mr Hewitt spoke on how data analytics and connectivity will be central to the integration of autonomous vehicles as a fist-mile-last-mile solution.

SAGE has partnered with Local Motors to trial the autonomous shuttle ‘Olli’ and SAGE’s smart bus stop at Holdfast Bay this year.

Speaking about the event, Mr Hewitt said it was incredible to see the majority of people had travelled interstate to attend.

“It shows there’s a high level of commitment and interest in delivering smarter transport solutions to reduce congestion on our roads,” he said.

SAGE’s Transport sector delivers solutions across: Major Infrastructure Projects, Congestion Management, Intermodal Transport, Data Analytics, and Operations and Maintenance.
