Your willingness to pitch in with BAE Systems and Navantia is very much appreciated. As with any sea trial in a first of class vessel, there have been challenges but your team was always there to help.

Challenge

The navy’s newest and biggest ever capital ships, HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide are currently in the final stages of commissioning the Landing Helicopter Docks (LHD) on board. The ships are a $3 billion investment by the Australian Defence Force.

The enormous ships are more than 32 meters wide, 230 meters long, and with a mast tall enough to touch the Sydney Harbour Bridge, they dwarf all others in the Royal Australian Navy fleet. The ships houses gas and diesel generators able to produce 33.5 megawatts of power, enough to power a city the size of Darwin and can carry 1100 fully equipped combat troops, up to 110 vehicles and 16 helicopters as well as thousands of tonnes of humanitarian aid.

The ship’s commissioning, led by Principal contractor BAE Systems, brings together 112 modules from around the country as well as 7 control systems, including the Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) from Spanish ship builder, Navantia.
The IPMS integrates all of the ships systems, except the combat system, including the water treatment, fire detection, HVAC, doors and propulsion.

SAGE Automation has worked with both BAE Systems and Navantia to commission and test the ship’s control systems.

Solution

SAGE has had a team of 38 on the ships, bringing together experts from around our national offices including Darwin, Brisbane, Adelaide and Victoria. The teams bring specialties in HAVC, communications, hydraulics and electrical team supervision. SAGE Automation is responsible for assisting in conducting the ‘set to work commissioning’ of approximately 50,000 I/O points.

Successful sea trials took place early in 2014 for HMAS Canberra, firming the ships place in the Australian fleet shortly, while HMAS Adelaide sea trials have taken place in June 2015.

Outcome

BAE Systems Australia’s LHD Program Acceptance Manager Richard Dominy, expressed his personal thanks to the SAGE Team aboard the recent sea trials to Sydney, “Your willingness to pitch in with BAE Systems and Navantia is very much appreciated. As with any sea trial in a first of class vessel, there have been challenges but your team was always there to help.”

SAGE Automation works with BAE Systems across multiple lines of business on the LHD project, successfully delivering set to work and commissioning support, manufacturing electrical panels, providing service and support as well as carrying out training to maximize the value of their technology.

On completion of the training, Robert Stirling, LHD Project Training Manager at BAE Systems provided this feedback;

“Training for LHD01 Nuship Canberra is now completed and has been well received by the customer. SAGE Automation’s contribution was enjoyed by all the participants with very good reviews from the independent quality assessor. So to you and your team, I wish to pass on from BAE and the Commonwealth, a very well done.”
